Taylor was also a member of "The Flying Six," the six-man team that made up the TSU track and field squad.

Taylor played football and ran track for TSU from 1968-1972. His track resume included: Three-time NAIA 100-meter champ (1970-1972), One-time 100 meter SWAC Champion (1972), One-time National AAU champion (1972). Outside of TSU, Taylor gained a silver medal in the 1972 Olympics in the 100 meters and garnered a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay that ran a then world-record time of 39.1. Taylor's time of 9.00 in the 100-yard dash, is one of his proudest achievements.
