Dyer, one of the most storied female athletes in TSU history and an original member of the Tigerettes women’s track team, received an athletic scholarship to TSU in 1966. The Topeka, Kansas native and was one of the six original TSU Tigerettes to start the women's track and field team.   

Dyer was a member of the TSU's 4x100-relay and sprint medley team that set many records during 1966-1970. Dyer was the indoor NAIA Champion in the 60-yard dash and 80-meter hurdles.

Dyer was ranked third in the United States in the 80 meter hurdles in 1968, tying the American record (10.5 seconds). She also was a member of the USA Olympic Track and Field in Mexico City, Mexico, participating in the 80-meter hurdles. In 1966 Dyer was the first female athlete inducted into the TSU Hall of Fame. She also was the university's first female Olympian. After two successful years of running hurdles and on relay teams, Dyer risked everything and moved to Chicago to attempt to qualify for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. She qualified for the Olympics in the 80-meter hurdles. She made it to the semi-final round where her fastest time of 10.5 seconds placed her in the top 15 fastest women in the world in 1968.
