The late Edward Haywood Adams, who coached nine years at Texas Southern (1949-58), compiled a 264-54 record. He was the son of Grambling State fonder Charles P. Adams and attended Tuskegee for undergrad and earned a Master's from the University of Iowa. Adams had 4 seasons with 30-plus wins and 5 conference titles. The former Adams Gym on the TSU campus was named after him as he won four SWAC Titles and made several appearances in the NAIA Tournament. His teams finished second in the NAIA Nationals in 1955-56, reached the quarterfinals in 1956-57 and was third in 1957-58. Some of the players Adams coached were Woody Saulsberry, Benny Roy, Freddie Maura, Willie Taylor and Bennie Swain. Just one week after the beginning of fall practice for the 1958 season, Adams died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
