Women's Golf Claims HBCU Hall of Fame Title

SUWANEE, Ga. – The Texas Southern women's golf team were victorious at the 40th Thomas W. Dortch Jr. Golf Classic Hall of Fame hosted by the Black College Golf Coaches Association on Tuesday. The Tigers posted a 36-hole total of 607 (310 – 297) to win the tournament by nine strokes.

Freshman Carmen Pate was the top scoring Tiger with her two-day total of 5-over-par 147 (74 – 73). Pate's 2-over-par second round included four birdies, nine pars, and five bogeys or higher. Her efforts also earned her a 2nd place finish individually.

Senior Azul Amezcua finished five shots back tied in 5th place individually on 10-over-par with her 152 (76 – 76) total. Junior Shawnise Gregory came in 8th place on 156 (78 – 78). Fellow junior Thaiz Amezcua posted the tournament low-round of a 1-under-par, 70 to aid in the Tiger's victory. Amezcua's round included three birdies, 13 pars, and two bogeys.

The Thomas W. Dortch Jr. Golf Classic Hall of Fame was hosted at Laurel Springs Golf Club in Suwanee, Georgia and feature 14 HBCU men's golf teams and 9 women's teams. Schools competing on the men's side included Alabama A&M, Arkansas Pine–Bluff, Chicago State, Jackson State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Southern University, Texas Southern University, Fisk University, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone, Miles College, Morehouse College, and Savannah State. The Women's teams included Chicago State, Delaware State, Chicago State, Jackson State, North Carolina Central, Paine College, Savannah State, Southern University, and Texas Southern University.

The Tigers are back in action Oct. 10-12 when they compete in the SAS Championship HBCU Invitational hosted by the PGA Tour and the Black College Golf Coaches Association at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C.
