SUWANEE, Ga. — The Texas Southern women's golf team's season opener was shortened from a 36-hole event to an 18-hole tournament Tuesday because of inclement weather. The Tigers finished third at the 41st Annual Thomas W. Dortch Jr. HBCU Collegiate Golf Classic, hosted by the Black College Golf Coaches Association, with a one-day team score of 313.
Junior Abiha Syed led the Tigers, carding a 2-over 74 to finish tied for third individually. Syed recorded one birdie, 14 pars and three bogeys during her round. Senior Thaiz Amezcua and junior Daniah Syed each shot a 6-over 78 to finish tied for 12th, four strokes behind Abiha Syed. Sophomore Carmen Pate finished at 11-over par, while Zufan Girard finished at 13-over par.
The 41st Annual Thomas W. Dortch Jr. HBCU Collegiate Golf Classic was held at Bear's Best Atlanta Golf Club in Suwanee, Ga, and featured 16 men's teams and eight women's teams from historically Black colleges and universities. The women's field included Chicago State, Delaware State, Fisk, Jackson State, North Carolina Central, South Carolina State, Southern and Texas Southern.
The Tigers return to action Oct. 4-6 at the Windy City Classic, hosted by Chicago State at Harborside Golf Course.
