HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Texas Southern University women's soccer battled throughout the evening but fell 3-1 to Sam Houston on Sunday.

Sam Houston opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Ashtyn Magnuson found the back of the net, giving the Bearkats an early 1-0 advantage. Texas Southern continued to compete and looked for an equalizer, but Sam Houston added to its lead just before halftime when Taylor Vance scored in the 43rd minute.

The Bearkats carried a 2-0 advantage into the break.

Texas Southern continued to create opportunities in the second half, putting nine shots on target while goalkeeper play kept the Tigers within striking distance. Sam Houston goalkeeper Hannah Stipp finished with eight saves.

Sam Houston extended its lead late in the match when Natalie Sippos converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

Texas Southern answered almost immediately. Savannah Muldrew scored just 16 seconds later, with Gabby Gonzalez providing the assist, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Tigers finished the match with 13 shots, including nine on goal, while Sam Houston recorded 25 shots and 11 shots on target. Texas Southern also held an 8-8 advantage in saves.

TSU is back in action Thursday night at home versus SFA for a 7 p.m. match.
