Soccer Battles To A 1-1 Draw With UTSA

SAN ANTONIO - Ava Coverdale's goal in the closing minutes allowed Texas Southern to finish in a 1-1 draw at UTSA Thursday evening.

Originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m., lightning delayed the match for nearly 90 minutes. Despite the delay, UTSA managed to set the tone offensively with eight shots within the first 25 minutes but goalie Alicia Audu was up for the assignment as she recorded five saves en route to a scoreless first half.

The second half was a mirror image of the first in terms of production for both teams but UTSA managed to strike first in the 60th minute as they intercepted a pass deep in the backfield which set up a shot off the post for the 1-0 lead. Even though TSU fell early, the Tigers continued to battle on both ends.

The Tigers received a pair of scares in the 80th minute as UTSA was whistled for a pair of offsides on potential breakaways. TSU would finally break through in the 84th minute after the second UTSA offsides as Jiselle Caffey broke free deep in Roadrunner territory and found Coverdale face-to-face with the goalie. Coverdale positioned the ball right past the goalie's legs to even the score at 1-all.

The defense would hold serve from that point for TSU as the Tigers tied with UTSA for the first time in series history.

TSU finished with six shots while Audu had seven saves. The Tigers are back in action on Sunday at Texas State for a 7:30 p.m. start.
