CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas Southern clawed back multiple times but came up just short in a 5–4 loss to Texas A&M–Corpus Christi on Friday afternoon at Chapman Field.
TSU matched the Islanders with nine hits, highlighted by Nate Lopez, who went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Byron Robinson added a solo home run in the sixth to briefly tie the game at 3–3. Zachari Pace also turned in a strong offensive performance, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
A&M–Corpus Christi opened the scoring with a run in the third, but TSU responded with a two‑run fifth inning. Lopez delivered a two‑out, two‑RBI double to put the Tigers ahead 2–1. The Islanders answered in the sixth with a solo homer before adding single runs in the sixth and seventh to reclaim a 3–2 lead.
Robinson tied the game again in the sixth with his leadoff shot to left. TSU added another run in the ninth when Pace singled and scored, but the Tigers could not overcome AMCC's two‑run ninth inning surge.
Joshua Peña delivered a strong start for Texas Southern, allowing just one run on four hits over five innings while striking out two. Reliever Demarques Thompson (0–1) was tagged with the loss after the Islanders scored twice in the bottom of the ninth.
TSU turned three double plays defensively and had runners in scoring position in four separate innings but finished just 1-for-8 with RISP.
