• The Texas Southern women's basketball team is back in action for its conference home opener agasint Mississippi Valley State, Thursday January 8 at 6 pm.
• TSU returns two starters — Daeja Holmes and Aaliyah Henderson — along with one letterwinner, Maci Quiller, from last season while welcoming nine newcomers to the roster.
• Since their first meeting in 2012, the Tigers have controlled the series with 22 wins to MVSU's 6, highlighted by a 12‑game win streak from 2017–2023 and several lopsided victories, including an 85–30 win in 2016. Mississippi Valley State had the early upper hand with three straight wins in 2012, but Texas Southern has since taken command, winning eight of the last ten and sweeping the 2024–25 season series; with competitive battles like the 82–77 TSU win in 2022 and MVSU's narrow 70–69 upset in 2024.
• Head Coach Vernette Skeete enters her fourth season at TSU. Last year, she guided the Tigers to a 14–4 SWAC record, finishing tied for second place and reaching the SWAC Tournament semifinals, a dramatic turnaround from her first two seasons (9–49 overall).
• Under Skeete, TSU earned its first‑ever postseason appearance, hosting a historic WNIT game at TSU and advancing to the second round before falling to Louisiana Tech.
•Graduate guard Daeja Holmes leads the Tigers with 11 points per game and adds 4 rebounds per contest. A returning starter, Holmes paces TSU in shooting efficiency, posting a .392 field goal percentage and a .313 mark from beyond the arc. Her experience and scoring ability make her a key piece for Texas Southern's offense this season.
• Coach Jason James was named the new head coach on April 28, 2025. Coach James took over as interim head coach on December 13, 2024. Coach James led The Devilettes to 6 conference wins in SWAC most wins in the two previous season combined. Also, earning a bid in the conference championship in Atlanta for the first time since 2018-19 season and the devilettes first win in tournament since 2012 over FAMU, Coach James also swept archrival Alcorn State and ended the regular season with a win against the other big rival Jackson State.
• Coach Jason James came to Mississippi Valley State University in the summer of 2022 from Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina in which he served four years as Head Women's Basketball and the last three years as the Head Men's Basketball Coach.
• Graduate forward Ariel Jefferson anchors Mississippi Valley State in the paint, contributing 10 points per game along with 6 rebounds.
• TSU was picked to finish fourth in the SWAC Preseason Poll.
• MSVU was picked to finish 12th in the SWAC Preseason Poll.
