Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Soccer claims a shutout win over UTRGV on the road 1-0

EDINBURG – Texas Southern had key performances turned in by Paige Howard, Marlyn Campa, Liliana Hernandez and its entire defense on Wednesday as the Lady Tigers captured a 1-0 shutout win over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team.

UTRGV extended its scoreless streak to a program record 327:20 before conceding a goal in the final minute at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The Vaqueros' scoreless streak started with the final 29:58 of a 2-2 double overtime draw at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 6, ran through back-to-back shutouts of South Dakota and Houston Baptist over the weekend, and ended with 45 seconds left in regulation when a Paige Hayward corner kick was redirected to Maya Turner, who found Marlyn Campa for the game-winning goal.

It was the first goal allowed by UTRGV junior goal keeper Maria Eriksen this season. The Lady Tigers finished with 13 corner kicks while the Vaqueros had four. Liliana Hernandez made three saves for the shutout. Each team attempted 12 shots, while the Lady Tigers held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.

Texas Southern will now return home for a four-game home stand that kicks off on Sept. 25th versus Grambling State at Durley Field.
