Lady Tigers defeat Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Texas Southern advanced in the 2015 SWAC Women's Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-13) win over Southern at the Horace H. Moody Intramural Center Saturday.

The action was back and forth early on, with neither side able to gain much separation from the other in the opening set. Trailing 16-14, the West No. 2 seed Jaguars put together a 5-0 run to seize the lead during the contest.
When Kali Fluke took serve for the Lady Tigers, Texas Southern got to within one. Southern broke serve to go up 20-18, and eventually closed the set out.

The Jaguars (10-21) looked like they would carry that momentum into the second set, scoring the frame's first four points. The West No. 1 seed Tigers responded with a 12-3 run to take over. The offensive outburst was later supplemented by a 9-1 scoring run that wrapped up the set for Texas Southern.

Texas Southern (15-18) began the third set by picking up six of the stanza's first seven points, as the Lady Tigers successfully employed a more finesse style of attacks at the net to offset Southern's block attempts en route to winning the frame.
Tied 6-6 in the fourth set, Texas Southern broke the period open, outscoring the Jaguars 19-7 the rest of the way.

For the Lady Tigers, Cassidy Jannson picked up 12 kills and four blocks with a .611 attack percentage. Robyn Shannon had 14 kills and 16 digs. Fluke stuffed the stat sheet with nine kills, eight assists, five digs and six blocks. Chelsea Thompson and Asia Howard combined for 42 assists, with Thompson getting 22 of them.

Southern was led by Melodie Malone, who had eight kills and nine digs. Vaterra Calais had 23 assists and six digs. Diamond Williams had 15 digs.

The Lady Tigers advance to play Alabama A&M.
