BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama State advanced to the finals of the 2015 SWAC Women's Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 26-24) win over Texas Southern at the Clifford Seymour Gymnasium Saturday.
Alabama State (21-14) took control of a back-and-forth opening set, getting up 20-15. Texas Southern (16-19) rattled off five straight points to tie it, but the Hornets responded in kind with a 5-1 run to seal a first-set victory.
The Hornets executed similarly in the second set, breaking open what was an 8-7 lead during the frame with a 13-3 run to go up by double-digits. Texas Southern was unable to get any offense going to threaten the Hornets' advantage in the set.
Texas Southern started the third set productively, eventually getting to a slim 7-5 lead. Alabama State then put together a string of six unanswered points to take control. Despite TSU putting together a run that put them up 24-23, Alabama State pulled away with three unanswered points.
Myla Marshall accounted for 13 kills, four digs and two blocks for Alabama State. Rachel Smith added 11 kills and seven digs. Kori Kutsch had 38 assists and 12 digs.
Robyn Shannon led the Lady Tigers with 14 kills and chipped in six digs. Kali Fluke notched eight kills. Chelsea Thompson put in 19 assists and 11 digs. With the loss, Texas Southern's season comes to a close.Â
