HOUSTON- For the first time since 2000 the Texas Southern Tigers are 4-0 after defeating Alabama A&M 45-23 on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium.
TSU led 14-10 at halftime after an early touchdown on a special teams fumble recovery and a Malik Cross touchdown reception.
Texas Southern running back Daveonn Porter led the way on the ground as he ran for 123 yards on 18 carries including an electrifying 70 run in the third quarter which helped put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs.
"Porter has really helped gives us an edge in the last few game we've played," said TSU head coach Darrell Asberry. "Offensively establishing the run is something that we want to do each time we take the field. He has been a big part of the process."
Behind center quarterback Jamal Small and Homer Causey went a combined 15-of-32 for 225 yards and three touchdowns.
Porter also led the Tigers in receiving yards with 75 yards on three receptions. Linebacker Darian Claiborne helped set the tone on defense tallying a game high 11 stops for the night.
"Darian is a big part of a lot of the things we do defensively," said Asberry. "He flies around the field from sideline to sideline and he makes plays. He has been a huge addition to our team this season."
The Tigers will now get set to travel to Montgomery as they prepare to face Alabama State. TSU returns home on Oct. 4 for a SWAC contest versus Mississippi Valley State at BBVA Compass Stadium.
