Houston, TX – Darrell Asberry was named head coach of the Texas Southern Tigers football team today by athletics director Dr. Charles McClelland. Asberry was the head coach at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina for the past five seasons.
“If you look at his background and his track record, he developed Shaw into one of the premier Division II football programs," said Dr. McClelland. "He has a very high graduation rate. We wanted somebody who was going to come in and be a great football coach and a great fit for Texas Southern University and I think Darrell can help us achieve our goals."
As head coach, Asberry had a 40-25 overall record and a 30-13 conference record at Shaw. He captured three CIAA Championships in five seasons (2007, 2008 & 2010).
His teams ranked at the top in the nation both offensively and defensively. He also boasts an impressive graduation rate for his players.
“This is a great opportunity for me and my family to be a part of something great like Texas Southern,” said new TSU football head coach Asberry. “I'll give 110% to help the young men at TSU finish school and win championships. Texas Southern is striving to be the best and I want to be a part of the best.”
Asberry served as offensive coordinator at North Carolina Central, Albany State, and Jackson State. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native played quarterback at Jackson State where he received a bachelor's of science degree in Criminal Justice.
