Tom Anthony

Tom Anthony was named Defensive Coordinator of Texas Southern University's football program in 2015. Anthony has had prior coaching stints at Miami of Ohio and Youngstown State.

During his first season at Texas Southern Anthony helped architect one of the leagues’ top defensive units. The Tigers ranked 3rd in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in scoring defense and 4th in total defense. The Tigers improved significantly under the guidance of Anthony in stopping the ground attack of opponents as TSU finished 4th in the conference in rushing defense.

Texas Southern defensive players Archie Rice and Jamal Lucas each enjoyed stellar seasons in 2016 as they both ranked in the top 10 in the league in tackles. Along with Sean Jones and Demetrius Johnson making 3 out of the top 10 tacklers in the SWAC lining up for Texas Southern.

Anthony’s coaching career includes stops at Miami of Ohio and Youngstown State. In 2009 at Youngstown he helped with the outside linebackers and, in 2008, he assisted then YSU defensive line coach and coach Antoine Smith.

During the 2007 season, Anthony coached wide receivers and coordinated the passing game for the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. At his alma mater, Augustana College (Rock Island, Iowa) in 2006, he served as defensive backs coach. The Vikings won the conference championship.

As a player at Augustana in 2005, Anthony earned first-team All-America honors as a defensive back, leading the entire NCAA in interceptions with 13. He played in the Arena Football League with the New York Dragons, the Albany Quest and the Quad City Steamwheelers.
