Texas Southern Football added Matt Jones to its staff prior to the start of the 2017 football season. Jones came to TSU after serving the 2016 season as the offensive line coach at Jackson State. Prior to that Jones spent two seasons at Tulane. 

Jones went to Tulane after spending the 2013 season as the tight ends coach at Villanova University, where he helped the Wildcats to a 6-5 overall record.

Prior to Villanova, Jones coached at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo., for two seasons as the offensive line coach, as well as the run game and academic coordinator.

Jones helped Avila set 16 offensive school records, including fewest sacks allowed, rushing yards in a season and rushing touchdowns.
