Larry Holton brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Texas Southern football program.  He joined the Tigers in 2011 as the running backs coach.

Holton has been coaching since 1970 when he began his career as a student assistant at Iowa State, his alma mater.  Since them, Holton has coached running backs, defensive backs, linebackers, receivers, tight ends and he’s served as special teams coordinator and offense coordinator.
His career has taken him to ten NCAA Division I programs and one Division I FCS program.

Holton has coached at Iowa State (1970-1972 & 1995-1998), Florida State (1972-1973), the University of Pittsburgh (1973-1979), Oklahoma State (1979-1983), the University of Illinois (1983-1987), Northwestern (1988-1991), West Virginia (1992-1995), and Western Illinois (2000-2002), Eastern Michigan (2003), Delaware State (2004-2005) and San Diego State (2005-2008).
 
Success has been prominent throughout Holton’s coaching career.  He has coached on five conference championship teams and he has one national championship from the University of Pittsburg in 1976.  He’s also coached in 15 post season bowl games.

Holton as tutored two of Iowa’s top all-time running backs in Tavian Banks and Sedrick Shaw. Banks earned All-America and conference offensive player-of-the-year honors in 1997, after he set a school single-season rushing record of 1,681 yards. Shaw was the eighth player in Big Ten history to rush for a 1,000 yards in three different seasons and left Iowa as its all-time leading rusher.

Holton is a native of Keokuk, Iowa.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Iowa State in 1970.  He played defensive back at Iowa State from 1965 to 1970 where he was a three year starter.
