Cal Baptist Claims 3-0 Win Over Volleyball

SAN FRANCISCO - Texas Southern volleyball fell 3-0 to Cal Baptist on Friday as they wrapped up the second day of its West Coast swing at the University of San Francisco.

Cal Baptist broke open a tight set one midway through to claim a 25-17 win in the opener.  

Texas Southern rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the set at 5-5 behind kills from Aaliyah Brown and Battle, along with consecutive Cal Baptist attack errors. Battle then delivered a service ace to give TSU a 7-6 advantage.
Cal Baptist answered with a run to take control as they extended the margin to 17-9 before Texas Southern began to chip away. The Tigers pulled within 22-15 after kills by Lacey Kusnier and a block involving Houston and Spencer. Houston and Spencer continued to make an impact at the net, but Cal Baptist closed the set with three of the final four points to win 25-17.

Texas Southern came out aggressively in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead. Cal Baptist responded to move ahead 9-7, but the Tigers regained momentum and erupted for a 9-2 run, taking a 16-9 lead. During the run, Texas Southern received kills from Kusnier, Emory Harper and Battle, while Cal Baptist committed several attack errors. The Tigers' defense also produced blocks from Houston and Aaliyah Brown. Cal Baptist gradually erased the deficit. Barber's serving helped spark a comeback that brought the Lancers within 16-15 before Cal Baptist eventually tied the set at 18-18. The Lancers then scored four straight points to take a 22-19 lead.
Battle answered with another kill to keep TSU within striking distance, and Houston followed with a kill to make it 24-21. Cal Baptist, however, ended the set on a kill to take a 2-0 match lead.

Cal Baptist seized early control of the third set, opening with a 4-0 run. Texas Southern responded with kills from Kusnier and Selana Morales to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Lancers maintained their advantage, building a 13-7 lead behind Baxa and DeJong. Texas Southern continued to battle, getting kills from Spencer and Battle while trimming the margin to 14-12.

Cal Baptist answered with a four-point stretch to move ahead 18-14. Texas Southern later pulled within 22-18 after a Spencer kill and a Cal Baptist attack error. A Houston-Spencer block made it 24-19, but Cal Baptist finished the match on a kill for the 25-19 victory. Lauren Battle led the Tigers offensively with 11 kills on 17 attacks, hitting .588, while adding an ace and eight digs for 12 points. Aliyah Spencer and Ava Houston added four kills apiece, with Spencer contributing two blocks and Houston recording three blocks.

Kadence Davison directed the Texas Southern offense with 15 assists, while Ava Ray added 10 assists. Davison also finished with nine digs, followed by Battle with eight and Lauanna Pino with seven.
