Texas Southern Holds Off Alabama A&M, 7–5, to Open Road Series

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Texas Southern built an early lead and held off a late Alabama A&M rally to secure a 7–5 victory Thursday afternoon at Bulldog Field.

The Tigers struck quickly, plating two runs in the first inning. Jonathan Trejo opened the scoring with an RBI single to right, bringing home Zachari Pace after a fielding error allowed him to reach. Byron Robinson followed with a run‑scoring double to left‑center to make it 2–0.

TSU extended its lead in the third. Evan Joubert delivered the game's biggest swing, ripping a two‑run double down the left‑field line and later scoring on a Miguel Morales groundout to push the advantage to 5–0. Trejo added his third hit of the day in the fifth, and Morales drove him in with a single to left to make it 6–0.

Right‑hander Joshua Peña (4–1) kept the Bulldogs in check through six innings, allowing just two earned runs on three hits while striking out five. He worked out of traffic in the fifth, but Alabama A&M pushed across two runs on a bases‑loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

TSU added an unearned run in the sixth when Christopher Chavez reached on an error, scoring Shaun Williams, who had tripled to start the inning.

Alabama A&M threatened late, scoring three times in the ninth on RBI hits from Brycen Hammonds and Tarris Murray. Reliever Joshua Prieto settled in to record the final outs and earn his first save of the season.

Trejo finished 3‑for‑4 with two runs and an RBI, while Robinson, Joubert, and Morales each drove in multiple runs. Williams added two hits, including a triple, and stole two bases as TSU totaled 14 hits on the afternoon.

Hammonds led Alabama A&M with three RBIs, and AJ Anderson scored twice.

Texas Southern continues its weekend series in Huntsville on Friday.
