Tigers Outlast Prairie View in 14–12 SWAC Shootout

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Texas Southern used a balanced offensive attack and a decisive four‑run ninth inning to pull away from Prairie View, earning a 14–12 victory in a back‑and‑forth SWAC matchup Saturday afternoon at Tankersley Field.

The Tigers finished with 15 hits and scored in eight of nine innings, answering multiple Prairie View rallies to secure the road win.

Anthony Ruiz set the tone early, launching a leadoff home run in the first inning to give Texas Southern an early lead. Shaun Williams followed with a solo homer in the second, and the Tigers continued to apply pressure with single runs in each of the first three frames.

Texas Southern broke the game open in the fourth inning with three runs, highlighted by RBI singles from Ruiz and Christopher Chavez, along with a stolen base that led to another score. Prairie View answered with a five‑run third and a three‑run sixth to keep the game tight.

Ruiz led the Tigers offensively, finishing 3‑for‑5 with a home run, double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Chavez went 2‑for‑3 with two walks, an RBI and a stolen base, while Tanner Marek and Shaun Williams each collected two hits. Williams drove in two runs, including his second‑inning homer.

Marco Mueses delivered a key pinch‑hit RBI single in the eighth inning, and Texas Southern put the game out of reach in the ninth. Zachari Pace opened the frame with an RBI double, followed by a two‑run double from Jonathan Trejo and an RBI single by Byron Robinson to push the Tigers' lead to 14–12.

On the mound, Demarques Thompson closed the door in the ninth inning to earn the save. Seve Medrano picked up the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with one strikeout.

Texas Southern finished the game with six extra‑base hits and capitalized on Prairie View miscues, scoring four unearned runs.
