Texas Southern kicked off its senior weekend in style with a dominant 12-0 win over Grambling State on Friday at the Houston Astros Urban Youth Academy.
Texas Southern wasted little time getting on the board as Kylie Wilson led the bottom of the first with a double and scored two batters later on Lanay Carr's single. Karisma Garcia singled followed by Jade McQueen's walk to load the bases which led to Dania Durr's RBI single. Katelynn Cooper drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by Penelope Saenz's RBI for a 4-0 lead.
TSU plated four more runs in the second as Carr, Jade McQueen and Durr drove in runs for an 8-0 margin. After a scoreless third, TSU returned to the scoreboard in the fourth as Alenna Carrizales drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by RBIs from Saenz and Amerie Martin.
Starter Zaria Turner controlled the Grambling State lineup from start to finish as she struck out six. Durr and Destiny Menchaca both went 3-for-3, with Durr driving in three RBIs.
The series resumes at 12 p.m. Saturday with senior day festivities slated for the conclusion of game two at the Houston Astros Urban Youth Academy.
