Texas Southern closed out its regular season in style following a three-game sweep over Grambling State Saturday at the Houston Astros Urban Youth Academy.
TSU 2, GRAMBLING STATE 1
Texas Southern scored twice in the first and held off a late Grambling State charge to claim game one 2-1.
Kylie Wilson led the bottom of the first off with a walk and stole two bases to move into scoring position. Senior Destiny Menchaca hit a sac fly for the game's first one. Fellow senior Lanay Carr singled, stole second and scored what would be TSU's final run on a RBI single from senior Karisma Garcia.
Wilson kept the Grambling State offense at bay but ran into trouble in the seventh as Kamryn Broussard drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a grounder to first. Alexis Hope hit a shot to right field to score Broussard. An error by TSU on the potential exchange allowed Hope to reach third. Grambling State's Hailey Hughes hit a deep shot to right field but right fielder Zariah London made the catch to end the game and seal the series.
Carr led TSU with two hits while Wilson went the distance and only allowed five hits.
TSU 9, GRAMBLING STATE 1
Karisma Garcia and Dania Durr led the second off with a walk followed by Katelynn Cooper's single which loaded the bases. A GSU fielding error on Penelope Saenz's at-bat allowed both Garcia and Durr to score for a 2-0 lead. Jordyn Talbert drove in the game's third run as she hit an RBI groundout to third.
TSU returned to the scoreboard in the third as Destiny Menchaca doubled followed by Lanay Carr's walk. Garcia's sac bunt moved both runners to scoring position followed by Jade McQueen's walk to load the bases. Durr drew another walk which allowed Menchaca to score for a 4-0 lead. GSU changed pitchers as a result of the walks and forced a flyout for the second out. However, Penelope Saenz hit a shot to center to drive in two runs for a 6-0 margin.
TSU tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth as Lanay Carr singled and scored on an infield error. TSU loaded the bases in the fifth and ended the game on Kylie Wilson's two-RBI single as Marisa Paula and Amelie Martin both crossed home.
Wilson led TSU with two hits and two RBI while Saenz also drove in two runs.
TSU will turn its attention towards postseason play and prepare for the upcoming SWAC Tournament in early May in Gulfport, Miss. Stay tuned to TSUSports.com and TSU social media channels for upcoming schedule announcements.Â
