HOUSTON — Texas Southern jumped out early and never looked back, rolling to a 12–5 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday night at Bobcat Field.
The Tigers scored five runs in the opening inning and added seven more over the next two frames to build a commanding 12–0 advantage after three innings. Texas Southern finished with 15 hits, highlighted by multi-hit performances from Anthony Ruiz, Jonathan Trejo and Byron Robinson.
Trejo went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, including a solo home run in the second inning. Robinson delivered the biggest swing of the night in the first, launching a three-run homer as part of a four-RBI performance. Ruiz added three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Tigers, while Miguel Morales chipped in two hits and an RBI.
Texas Southern sent 11 batters to the plate during a six-run third inning, extending the lead to double digits. Nate Lopez knocked in a run with a single before Ruiz cleared the bases with an RBI triple. Trejo, Robinson and Morales followed with consecutive RBI singles to cap the outburst.
On the mound, Jose Luccioni earned the win after working five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven. The Tigers' bullpen combined for four innings of relief, limiting Alcorn State to three runs over the middle innings before shutting the door late.
Alcorn State broke through in the fourth when Asher Friedman singled home a run, then added a solo homer by Kanious Davis in the fifth. The Braves' final push came in the sixth, as Christian Dunn homered to center for a three-run shot, trimming the deficit to 12–5.
Kayden Sutton took the loss for Alcorn State, surrendering 12 runs on 14 hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Texas Southern committed no errors in the field and struck out 12 Alcorn State batters, improving its performance on both sides of the ball in the series opener.
