Tigers Power Past Grambling, 12–1, Behind Mays’ Dominance and Four Homers

Justin Mays turned in a dominant outing and Texas Southern's offense erupted for four home runs in a 12–1 victory over Grambling on Sunday afternoon at MacGregor Park.

Mays struck out a career-high 12 batters over eight innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run as the Tigers bounced back with a wire-to-wire performance in the SWAC matchup.

Texas Southern broke open a scoreless game with a four-run fourth inning and never looked back. Evan Joubert jump-started the scoring with a two-run home run, and Anthony Ruiz followed with a two-run shot later in the frame to put the Tigers ahead 4–1.

The Tigers added four more runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on patience at the plate with four walks and a pair of RBI singles. Jonathan Trejo knocked in a run with a single to left, while Byron Robinson drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 8–1.

Texas Southern capped the scoring with another four-run eighth inning. Trejo delivered an RBI single before Robinson launched a three-run homer to right, his second extra-base hit of the day, to seal the 12–1 victory.

Robinson finished with four RBIs, while Trejo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Joubert and Ruiz each drove in two runs, and the Tigers worked eight walks as a team.

Grambling scored its lone run in the second inning on an RBI single by Chris Marcellus, but Mays settled in quickly, striking out at least one batter in every inning and retiring the final six hitters he faced.

Texas Southern totaled nine hits and committed just one error, while the pitching staff held the Tigers to two hits on the afternoon.
