Softball Sweeps Alcorn State In Saturday Doubleheader

TSU swept its first SWAC series of the year as they defeated Alcorn State in a doubleheader on Saturday.

TSU 8, ALCORN STATE 0

Kylie Wilson threw a one-hitter while helping her own case at the plate as TSU won game one 8-0.

With two outs in the first, a fielding error at the pitcher's mound after Katelynn Cooper's at-bat allowed Wilson to score from third for a 1-0 lead. Karisma Garcia drove in the second run with a single up the middle for a 2-0 margin.

TSU broke the game open with a five-run second as Marisa Perla's fielder's choice led to Jade McQueen scoring for a 3-0 lead. Dania Durr upped the score to 5-0 with a two-RBI single to right as both Perla and Wilson scored. ASU went to the bullpen to the stop the bleeding but Garcia's two-RBI single added to the tally as TSU led 7-0.

After three scoreless innings by both teams, TSU ended the game early in the sixth as Wilson led the inning off with a single, stole second and scored on Perla's RBI double.

Wilson, Perla, Durr and Garcia all had two hits while Perla, Durr and Garcia had two RBI. Wilson  struck out four while allowing only one hit.

TSU 3, ALCORN STATE 2

Jade McQueen's RBI single in the fourth moved TSU ahead for good as they claimed a 3-2 win to compete the sweep.

Game two started out as a pitching duel between ASU's Olivia Miller and TSU's Miranda Pena as both pitchers kept the offenses at bay. Pena had a bases loaded jam in the second but pitched her way out of it with an inning-ending strikeout. TSU struck first in the second as Lanay Carr doubled and moved over to third after a sac bunt. A wild pitch brought her home for a 1-0 lead.

Kylie Wilson led the third off with a well-placed bunt single and stole second. She was sacrificed over to third and Karisma Garcia sacrificed her in for a 2-0 lead. The lead was brief as ASU hit a two-run homer over the left field fence in the fourth to knot it at 2-all. After a walk two batters later, TSU was forced to use its bullpen as Melonie Guardiola was called into relief with a 2-0 count. ASU attempted to sac bunt the runner at first on her first pitch but the TSU defense threw the batter out at first and ended the inning at third as KateLynn Cooper threw the lead runner out at third.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, TSU's Mia Montemayor hit a double to right. Jade McQueen moved TSU back on top 3-2 with a single over the glove of the first baseman.

In the top of the sixth, ASU made things interesting with two runners on and one out but Guardiola pitched herself out of the jam with flyout and full count strikeout.
