Renfro's Career Night, McCoy's Late Touchdown Run Caps Off Tough Overtime Win Over Grambling State

Texas Southern persevered throughout the night on both sides of the ball as Cam'Ron McCoy's 6-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted the Tigers to a thrilling 23-20 win over Grambling State on Saturday night at Thorne Stadium.

The Tigers set the tone on their opening possession, marching down the field on a 14-play drive before losing a fumble at the Grambling State 5-yard line. The TSU defense forced a punt on the ensuing possession, and the Tigers broke through early in the second quarter with a 13-play, 44-yard drive that consumed 6:46. Miguel Arana III capped the possession with a 47-yard field goal at the 12:11 mark to give Texas Southern a 3-0 lead.

Grambling State began its next possession with favorable field position and converted a fourth-and-1 at its own 47-yard line to keep the drive alive. However, the TSU defense held firm and forced Grambling State to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Theo Caballero with 8:36 remaining, tying the contest at 3-3.

Both teams traded punts for the remainder of the half. TSU attempted to move into field goal range late in the second quarter but was unable to capitalize, sending both teams into the locker room tied at 3-3 following a defensive struggle.

Grambling State seized momentum to begin the third quarter, marching 75 yards on 10 plays during a drive that consumed 5:08. Quarterback Ashton Frye capped the possession with a 6-yard touchdown run at the 9:52 mark, giving Grambling State a 10-3 advantage. Outside of the scoring drive, the third quarter remained a defensive battle as both teams continued to trade punts.

TSU regained possession to open the fourth quarter and energized the crowd of more than 7,000 spectators as Athean Renfro Jr. took a toss and broke free up the middle for a 75-yard touchdown run. Arana converted the extra point to tie the game at 10-10 with 14:47 remaining.

The TSU defense continued to hold its own despite Grambling State advancing into Texas Southern territory, eventually forcing a punt at the TSU 44-yard line. However, the defense had little time to rest as Renfro once again broke free, racing 86 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter to give TSU a 17-10 lead with 11:23 remaining.

Despite the quick turnaround, the TSU defense responded with a three-and-out, giving the offense an opportunity to extend its lead and drain valuable time off the clock. McCoy broke free for a 26-yard run to the TSU 41-yard line, but the momentum shifted abruptly when the Tigers lost a fumble on the ensuing play, allowing Grambling State to regain possession at the TSU 41.

The ensuing drive featured several timely shoestring tackles by the TSU defense as Grambling State broke free for multiple significant gains but was stopped just before reaching open field. Grambling State eventually advanced to the TSU 6-yard line and scored on a third-down touchdown pass with 4:46 remaining, tying the contest at 17-17.

Similar to the previous week's thriller at Reliant Stadium, the TSU offense appeared poised to produce another late-game scoring drive. Facing second-and-18, McCoy connected with Kordell Rodgers, who made a spectacular 35-yard reception in traffic to move the Tigers toward midfield and keep the drive alive.

However, the Grambling State defense recovered from the big play and prevented TSU from advancing into scoring position. The Tigers eventually punted, and neither team managed to break the deadlock in regulation, sending the contest into overtime.

Playing in its second overtime game of the season, TSU won the coin toss and elected to play defense first. Grambling State converted a crucial second-and-16 from the TSU 31-yard line to extend its possession, but the Texas Southern defense rose to the occasion, holding Grambling State to a 31-yard field goal that gave the visitors a 20-17 advantage.

Texas Southern wasted little time responding on Halloween night.

Renfro opened the Tigers' overtime possession with a 20-yard run on first down, moving the ball to the Grambling State 5-yard line. After Renfro was stopped for a 1-yard loss on the following play, McCoy ended the game in dramatic fashion, racing six yards to the corner of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

The score secured TSU's second consecutive victory and third straight win over Grambling State.

Renfro delivered the game's standout individual performance, finishing with 233 rushing yards on 21 carries, an average of 11.1 yards per attempt. His touchdown runs of 75 and 86 yards highlighted a Texas Southern rushing attack that accumulated 317 yards and three touchdowns. Renfro finished just 19 yards shy of the TSU single-game rushing record of 252 yards.

McCoy completed 6 of 15 passes for 115 yards while adding 46 rushing yards and the game-winning touchdown. Jacob Washington contributed 38 yards on eight carries.

Kordell Rodgers led Texas Southern's receiving corps with two receptions for 49 yards. Fatu Mukuba added a 23-yard reception, while Renfro contributed a 17-yard catch.

The Tigers averaged 7.9 yards per offensive play compared to Grambling State's 4.1. Defensively, TSU held Grambling State to 120 passing yards and recorded two sacks.
