Texas Southern fell to Southern University 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21) in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at the Health & Physical Education Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Southern went on an early 6-1 run in set one to lead 11-5 and continued to extend the lead afte leading by as much as 10 en route to a 25-17 win. 16-13. Southern would regain control and claim a 21-16 margin but TSU fought back with a vengeance as they forced a 23-all tie. However, a bad set followed by an attack error by TSU moved the needle and set back into Southern's hands as they led 2-0.
Texas Southern responded emphatically in the third set, hitting .414 with 15 kills and only three errors. The Tigers pulled away from a 6-6 tie with a 5-0 run and maintained control throughout the remainder of the set, winning 25-15.
Southern regained momentum in the fourth set but TSU stayed within striking distance and eventually drew to within 20-18 after rallying from down 17-10. But once again Southern would take control with three straight points which led to a TSU timeout.
The Tigers drew to within 24-21 but SU ended the match with a kill for a 25-21 win.
Ava Houston led the Tigers with eight kills, while Morgynne McQueen and Lauren Battle added seven kills apiece. McQueen also posted a team-high five blocks, with Houston contributing three. Kennedi Walker recorded 22 assists, while Kadence Davison added 20 assists. Keagan St. Junious led the defensive effort with 18 digs, followed by Battle and Lacey Kusnier with 10 each.
TSU is back in action on Friday versus Alabama State at 6 p.m., inside the H&PE Arena.
