Soccer Claims 2-1 Win Over Prairie View A&M

Ava Coverdale scored a pair of goals as TSU soccer improved to 2-0 in SWAC play following a 2-0 win over Prairie View A&M Sunday night inside Durley Stadium.

""I'm really proud of the girls and the way we competed tonight," said head coach Danesha Adams. "We played really good soccer, and to get a win against a crosstown rival is a great result. We're 2-0 in conference now, and we're excited to build on that."

TSU was the aggressor early on with a pair of shot attempts within the first eight minutes. The Tigers would strike first as Gabby Gonzalez stole a pass which landed at the feet of Savannah Muldrew. Muldrew made a well-placed pass to a streaking Coverdale who pushed the shot in for the early 1-0 lead. Texas Southern continued to pressure the Panthers throughout the opening half, outshooting Prairie View A&M 12-2 and putting four shots on goal.

The Tigers returned to the board early in the second half as they regained possession and moved the ball downfield as Servane Blouin eluded two defenders for a shot at the goal. Blouin's shot was saved but Coverdale knocked it in off the deflection for a 2-0 lead.

Prairie View A&M refused to go away as they stole the ball from a TSU defender deep in TSU territory and fired it in from 17 yards out for a 2-1 deficit with 12:51 left. Despite the goal, TSU would hold on despite a late PVAMU charge to remain undefeated in SWAC play.

"We'll learn from the late goal and make sure we stay locked in for the full 90 minutes," added Adams. "I also really appreciate everyone who came out and supported us tonight."

Texas Southern finished with a commanding 22-7 advantage in shots and placed nine attempts on target. Alicia Audu made three saves in goal for the Tigers, while TSU also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Tigers will remain at home Thursday, Oct. 8, when they host Southern University at 6 p.m.
