Big 1st Quarter Propels FAU To Win Over TSU

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic had early success on special teams and defense en route to claiming a 66-10 win over TSU Saturday evening at Flagler Credit Union Stadium.

The Owls opened the contest with a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as they led 7-0 following the PAT. The TSU offense would answer as they advanced to the FAU 27 before settling on a 44-yard field goal from Miguel Arana III. However, the momentum was short as FAU once again scored on a kickoff return to lead 14-3.

TSU would commit a costly fumble which FAU turned into a touchdown for a 21-7 lead following the PAT with 6:38 left in the first quarter. The offense returned to the field for another drive and drove to the FAU 17, but the drive ended on an interception in the end zone.

The FAU offense finally touched the field late in the first quarter and scored a touchdown to lead 21-3. They would add three more scores in the half before TSU responded with an 11-yard touchdown run from Athean Renfro with 1:17 left. However, FAU closed the half out with a six-play, 75-yard drive to lead 49-10.

Despite the deficit, the TSU defense kept playing as FAU was held to only a field goal in the third quarter. The Owls returned to the endzone twice in the final quarter for the final margin.

TSU finished with 312 total yards as Renfro rushed for 101 yards on 20 attempts.

After a month away on the road, TSU starts a home stretch with five of its final six games in Houston. TSU hosts Mississippi Valley State next Saturday inside Thorne Stadium at 2 p.m.
