Tigers Suffer Tough Loss After Late Surge By Mississippi Valley State

Mississippi Valley State scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap off a 24-point fourth quarter surge as they handed TSU a disappointing 38-34 loss inside Thorne Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Delta Devils scored on their second drive of the contest as quarterback Josh Brown broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run followed by the PAT to lead 7-0. Defensive back Fabien Wells picked off a pass late in the quarter and the TSU offense responded at the end of the quarter as quarterback Cam McCoy found Zyion Claville for a 40-yard touchdown and a 7-7 tie after Miguel Arana's PAT.

The TSU defense responded to open the second quarter by forcing a punt but the return was muffed which allowed MVSU to recover at the TSU 4. Three plays later, MVSU moved ahead 14-7 with a touchdown pass. The offense responded with a 52-yard bomb from McCoy to Daveon Walker for tie the contest at 14-all and moved ahead 21-14 on an Athean Renfro 15-yard touchdown run with 3:51 left in the half. Renfro's second touchdown of the day upped the lead to 31-14 midway through the third quarter. TSU was on the verge of adding another score but a costly fumble at the end of the third quarter would come back to haunt them.

The defense held serve and allowed a field goal by MVSU to open the fourth quarter as they led 31-17. However, MVSU would get the ball back after a punt and added a touchdown down for a one-possession game. TSU would answer with a 46-yard field goal by Arana but the Delta Devils refused to go away after drawing to within 34-31 with an acrobatic touchdown catch on 4th-and-13 with four minutes remaining.

TSU was forced to punt again and MVSU would issue the potential knockout blow with a touchdown at the 42-second mark. The TSU offense put itself in position to win with no time left but the Hail Mary attempt was knocked down in the end zone.
