The Texas Southern University Department of Athletics recently held its inaugural NIL Summit last Friday, Jan. 23, inside the College of Education.
Held in partnership with B.E. Collective+, ABC Sports Foundation, and the TSU College of Education, the event delivered hands-on workshops, expert-led panels, financial education, mental wellness sessions, and brand development training to more than 150 TSU student-athletes, sport management majors, alumni stakeholders, and campus leaders.
Attendees also had the opportunity to network with local Houston businesses and hear firsthand what those businesses are looking for in potential collaborations. The event wrapped up on Friday evening with an invitation-only partner event at the prestigious Houston Club in Downtown Houston.
"Words can't express how proud I was to experience the collaboration between our student-athletes, administrators, and event partners during this inaugural event," said TSU Interim Director of Athletics Dr. Paula Jackson. "The NIL culture is evolving rapidly, and events such as this help our student-athletes, alumni, and campus partners understand what it will take to navigate potential NIL opportunities and be educated on how everyone can benefit from it."
"I thought the event was amazing," said TSU Assistant Professor of Sport Management Dr. De'Suan Dixon. "We had a strong population of students, faculty, and administration. I think our students got a lot of it as they're a walking business. Everyone can benefit from NIL now, and this event lets students know of the various opportunities out there in the marketplace."
