Texas Southern fought hard in a closely contested game against Jackson State but ultimately fell short with a final score of 7-3 in its Cactus Jack finale on Sunday.
Down 1-0 in the second, TSU overcame the early deficit as Jesse Herrera lll walked followed by Damian Garcia's sacrifice bunt which advanced him to second. After a strikeout by JSU for the second out, Jaden Flores drew a walk setting the stage for Evan Joubert's double to left field, which brought in two RBIs. Kelton Phillips reached on an error by the pitcher allowing Joubert to score the third run for TSU.
JSU responded with a run in the third to trail 3-2 before moving ahead 5-3 in the fifth thanks to a three-run homer by Joseph Eichelberger.
JSU continued their momentum, scoring two more runs in the sixth inning. TSU had opportunities to respond as the game drew on but stranded five runners between the sixth and eighth innings.
Jaden Jones and Joubert both had two hits with Joubert driving in two runs. James Malone struck out three as he was tagged wth the loss.
TSU is back in action on Tuesday at Lousiana for a 6:30 p.m. start in Lafayette.
