DENTON, Texas — Texas Southern women's basketball showed fight in the second half but couldn't overcome a slow start, falling 81–52 to North Texas in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.
The Tigers trailed 36–17 at halftime after shooting just 20 percent from the field in the opening two quarters. TSU found its rhythm after the break, scoring 22 points in the third quarter and knocking down three triples to cut into the deficit, but UNT's size and dominance in the paint proved too much. The Mean Green outscored TSU 62–12 inside and added 32 second-chance points.
Daeja Holmes led TSU with 11 points, including three 3-pointers, while Da'Myiah Lewis added 10 points and two treys. Lauren Perry chipped in seven points and went 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. The Tigers shot 40 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-20) but struggled at the stripe, finishing 12-of-25.
North Texas was powered by Megan Nestor, who posted a monster double-double with 34 points and 31 rebounds, setting the tone early and controlling the glass throughout. UNT shot 45 percent overall and held TSU without a lead for the entire contest.
TSU showed resilience in the second half, highlighted by a 6–0 run in the third quarter and strong bench contributions from Maci Quiller and Jordyn Marshall, but turnovers (23) and foul trouble stalled momentum.
The Tigers will look to regroup as they continue non-conference play on the road Monday at West Virginia in Morgantown. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
