Football Returns To Action Saturday At HCU Against UAPB

• Texas Southern returns to action Saturday evening with a match-up against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 6 p.m. inside Husky Stadium on the Houston Christian campus.

• Saturday's contest will feature live audio on KTSU 90.9 FM and will be shown live on SWAC TV.

• Due to a scheduling conflict with the Houston Dynamo, the game was moved to HCU to avoid playing on another date. TSU last played in the stadium in 2019.

• TSU will face UAPB for only the fifth time since 2019. UAPB is one of three teams in the SWAC that TSU has a winning record against all-time (Mississippi Valley State/Prairie View A&M).

• UAPB was picked sixth in the preseason poll. The Golden Lions have the fifth-ranked passing offense in the SWAC as Christian Peters is the No. 2 passer with 214 yards per game. Wide receiver Kareem Burke leads the way with 14 receptions for 257 yards while Jaylen Jennings ranks third in the SWAC with 78 yards rushing per game. Linebacker Danarius Hilliard is the top tackler with 22 stops.

• The kick return game has been a bright spot for TSU as they rank first in the SWAC with 31.5 yards per return. Kerien Charlo ranks second in the SWAC with 31.3 yards per return while Trent Leary and Chaunzavia Lewis have also performed well as of late.

• TSU has three players (Isaiah Bogerty, Charles George and Matthew Cooks) rank amongst the top four in the SWAC in tackles per game. Bogerty leads the league with 40 (10) total followed by George with 38 (9.5) and Cooks with 33 (8.3).

• TSU had three players earn preseason All-SWAC Second Team honors in Trent Leary (WR), Damarcus Thompson (DE) and Jeremy Ramirez (P).

• TSU's Chief of Staff Charles Nichols and UAPB head coach Alonzo Hampton were on the same staff at Florida State under former head coach Willie Taggert.

• After several years of offseason changes to the coaching staff, the Tigers finally had stability this offseason with no changes.

• TSU was picked to finish fourth in the SWAC during the annual SWAC Preseason Poll. TSU returns four offensive starters and two on defense.

• Injuries took a major toll for TSU last year as several key players return after season-ending injuries suffered during the Labor Day Classic in linebacker Jacob Williams and quarterback KJ Cooper. Two years ago, Williams was TSU's first 100-plus tackler since 2004 while Cooper led TSU to a Labor Day Classic win in 2024.

• Cris Dishman is the 18th head coach in the history of Texas Southern Football. Dishman inherits a tough task as the program has only had 28 winning seasons in 78 years of existence and hasn't recorded a winning season since 2000.
