Texas Southern fought back from a 1-0 first half deficit with a pair of second-half goals from Jacylyn Russ and Isabella Dillow to claim a 2-1 win over Southern on Sunday.
Â
Southern would draw a penalty kick in the 17th minute and took advantage with an early goal for the 1-0 lead. TSU had its chances early on with a plethora of shots but couldn't connect. Defensively, the Jaguars were aggressive at the goal with 11 first-half shots but the TSU defense found ways to keep them out of the goal and expand their lead.
Â
With the mid-October Houston heat a factor, conditioning would come into play for both teams to open the second half. TSU's Jacylyn Russ would beat her defender in the 59th minute off a throw in and tied it at 1-all. Thirty minutes later, TSU would break the tie as the defense regained control of the ball and Russ would find a streaking Dillow as The Woodlands native kicked it past her defender from 15 yards out for a 2-1 advantage. From there, the defense held on for TSU as they claimed a weekend sweep.
Â
Dillow, Rayal Henderson and Russ all had three shot attempts while goalie Alessandra Bastidas finished with five saves. TSU is back in action on Friday, Oct. 18 as they'll host Alabama A&M at 7 p.m. inside Durley Stadium.
