PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern dropped its 2022 SWAC opener at Prairie View A&M on Thursday night.
Prairie View A&M jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in set one but TSU closed the gap before PVAMU went on an 8-1 run to secure control of the set. TSU would fight back and draw within six at 20-14 but PVAMU held TSU to two points the remainder of the way for a 25-16 win.
TSU set the tone early in set two as they exploded for an 11-4 lead but the lead would evaporate as Prairie View A&M answered with a 14-4 surge which turned the tide of the set as TSU trailed 18-14. TSU drew within 18-15 but couldn't recover as they dropped set two 25-20.
Set three was typical TSU-Prairie View A&M fashion with a back-and-forth affair which featured several lead changes and ties. Tied at 20-all, Prairie View A&M went on a 4-0 surge to come within match point but Tyra Williams and Thalia Cordero-Moreno had kills along with a Williams and Chenise Cook assisted block coupled with a PVAMU error which tied the match at 24-all. TSU would move ahead 25-24 after Cook's kill but PVAMU answered with a kill and an ace to move on top 26-25. The contest was tied again after a PVAMU service error but the Panthers closed out the match with points via the block.
Danielle Lilley, Cordero-Moreno and Brea Rutledge all had four kills while Dallas Balanay-Flores had seven assists. Kaitlyn Scroggins added 15 digs two aces.
TSU is back in action Sunday at 5 p.m. at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
