Soccer Opens SWAC Play With Scoreless Draw

Texas Southern soccer was the aggressor on Friday but couldn't capitalize on several opportunities as they battled Alabama State to a scoreless draw in both team's SWAC opener on Friday night inside Durley Stadium.

The Tigers wasted no time in attacking the goal with three shot attempts within the first seven minutes of the match. Junior Sammie Garcia posted the first attempt in the fourth minute while sophomore Kaila Smith and grad student, Ari Mendez fired back-to-back shots in the seventh minute.

Strong offense by the team dominated through the first half with junior JJ Binder and Mendez with a shot attempt while Smith had five additional attempts. Senior Ayana Noel had two bringing an end to the first half.

The Tigers fought through the second half with nine additional goal attempts, two corner kicks, a header, and a penalty shot. Goalkeeper, Jaidyn Christophe lived up to her title with four saves and ensured the Hornets did not see the back of the net as the final buzzer went off with a scoreless draw.

Smith had seven shots followed by three from Hayley Vaughan.

The Tigers conclude their home doubleheader when they take on Alabama A&M on Sunday. Kickoff for Sunday's match against the Bulldogs is at 1 p.m. inside Alexander Durley Stadium.
