Volleyball Falls In Season Opener

SAN ANTONIO – TSU dropped its 2022 season opener by a 3-0 margin to Incarnate Word on Friday evening.
 
Incarnate Word claimed the first set by a 25-9 margin as they pulled away early with a big run and never looked back. Set two saw TSU fall behind 7-2 but Amber Johnson recorded a kill followed by a UIW attack error to draw the team within 7-4. Three TSU attack errors would thwart the momentum as UIW countered with a 7-1 surge to move ahead 14-5 before closing out the set ahead 25-13.
 
TSU would finally settle down in set three as they overcame an early 4-1 deficit with three straight points led by Thalia Cordero Moreno and Chenise Cook. UIW went on a 6-1 run to move ahead 10-5 but TSU would keep close as they trailed by three points on several occasions over the next few plays. A 7-3 UIW run upped its lead to 22-15 but TSU battled as UIW committed two attack errors coupled with a Caitlyn Roland kill and Kaitlyn Scroggins ace as the Tigers trailed 22-19. Both teams would begin to trade points once again from that point as UIW closed the match out 25-21.
 
Johnson led TSU with six kills while Dallas Balanay-Flores had 12 assists. Britney Ong had six digs defensively followed by a pair or block assists from Cook and Tyra Williams.
 
TSU is back in action with a doubleheader against Houston Baptist at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
