PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Texas Southern soccer split its first SWAC road trip of the season as they fell to Arkansas-Pine Bluff Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Lions kicked off the match with strong possession over the ball forcing the Tigers into a defensive mode early as they recorded four shots within the first 10 minutes. UAPB scored its first goal of the afternoon nine minutes into the match.
The Tigers never let up with grad student Ari Mendez delivering shot attempts in the 10th and 17th-minute mark, respectively. Two more shot attempts were delivered by Hayden McMillan and Kaila Smith by the 22nd minute. Junior Victoria Pucci delivered the next shot attempt for TSU shortly before the 30-minute mark while the Golden Lions delivered two more goals extending their lead to 3-0 over the Tigers.
The Tigers pushed through the second half with two shots by Smith and senior Asia Sylvan, as well as five-goal kicks among the rest of the players.
Graduate student Hayley Vaughan delivered the only goal from a penalty kick in the 64th minute of the match.
UAPB secured their win within the last 15 minutes of the match after scoring two more goals.
The Tigers continue road play next week as they'll face Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State. Kickoff for Friday's match against the Alcorn State is at 7 p.m. in Lorman, Miss.
