Volleyball Sweeps Alcorn State To Open Latest Road Trip

LORMAN, Miss. – Texas Southern captured its first volleyball sweep of the year after a 3-0 win at Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon.
 
TSU quickly set the tone with a 12-2 lead in the first set but the Braves answered with an 11-4 surge to close the gap to 16-13. Danielle Lilley took matters into her own hands with three kills and a service ace to fuel a 5-1 run to lead 21-14. ASU tried to make a late run but TSU kept them at bay as they won set one 25-19.
 
The Tigers had a pair of 4-0 runs and a 5-0 run for an early 17-9 lead. ASU would creep back into the contest after a 5-1 run to draw within 18-14 but a pair of Janiya Chapman kills stopped the run and kept TSU ahead 20-15. The Tigers would eventually pull away for a 25-19 win to close out set two.
 
Set three was tight from the beginning as TSU took an early 10-7 lead but they began to create separation with a team effort which led to a 7-3 surge to lead 17-10. A 6-0 ASU run moved the momentum needle to ASU but TSU responded with a 6-0 run of its own to lead 23-16. Alcorn State tried to rally late as the score was cut to 24-20 but TSU finished strong for a 25-20 win.
 
Chapman led TSU with 13 kills followed by 10 from Lilley. Lilley posted six aces while Dallas Balanay Flores had a team-high 28 assists and nine digs.
 
TSU closes its trip at Southern on Monday at 6 p.m.
