ABILENE, Texas – Texas Southern volleyball dropped a three-game set to Green Bay by a 3-0 margin Friday afternoon in the opener of the Wildcat Classic.
The first set was all Green Bay as they jumped out to a huge lead and never looked back as they claimed a 25-10 win in the opener. TSU would settle down to open set two as the contest was neck-and-neck until a 9-3 run by Green Bay saw its lead increase to 24-16. Janiya Chapman and Thalia Cordero Moreno scored late to draw within 24-18 but it wasn't enough as Green Bay won 25-18.
Set three went in favor of Green Bay early as they led 9-2 but Danielle Lilley, Cordero Moreno and Chenise Cook all scored to key an 8-3 surge to close within 12-10. Green Bay answered with a 7-2 run to up the lead to 19-12 but TSU fought back as they forced a plethora of Green Bay mistakes which fueled a 9-2 rally as the gap narrowed to 21-19. Unfortunately, three consecutive attack errors by TSU sent the momentum back to Green Bay. TSU attempted to close the gap late but the margin was too large to overcome as Green Bay closed out the match 25-22.
Cordero Moreno led TSU with eight kills while Aeris Ramsey added 15 assists and nine digs. Kyira Porch recorded 13 digs along with a pair of assisted blocks from Cook.
TSU is back in action at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against New Mexico and at 6 p.m. against Abilene Christian to close out the tourney.
