EDINBURG, Texas – Behind a 26-point effort from Marquia Turner the Texas Southern Lady Tigers Basketball team snapped a four-game Texas-Rio Grande Valley winning streak as they claimed a 69-55 contest Saturday afternoon at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Texas Southern jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the first six and a half minutes as Turner scored eight points during the initial surge.
UTRGV managed a pair of baskets to cut into the deficit but Texas Southern maintained control of the game through the half and behind Turner's sharp-shooting, used an 18-8 run to push ahead 49-30 with just 2:30 left in the third.
Texas-Rio Grande Valley closed the period with eight unanswered points and managed to close the gap to 51-43 in the fourth, but Turner connected on a three point basket to put the Lady Tigers back up by double-digits.
From there, Texas Southern closed the game with clutch free-throw shooting from Niya Mitchell and Bre'Nae Andrews.
Mitchell scored 13 points and grabbed five boards. Andrews added 11 points. TSU shot 53.7 percent from the floor in the game (22-of-41).
UTRGV's Madison Northcutt scored 15 points and nabbed 10 boards. Jameka Dowell added 12 points.
