HOUSTON- The Texas Southern Tigers basketball team got a 25 point contribution from the Southwestern Athletic Conference's leading scorer Zach Lofton as TSU was able to hold off Alabama State 70-68 on Saturday.
Alabama State came out playing with a high level of intensity in the first half as the Hornets raced off to a 7-0 advantage early in the games' first stanza.
Texas Southern subsequently rattled off eight unanswered points to take an 8-7 lead at the 13:33 mark of the first half. TSU would go into halftime trailing by a score of 27-24.
The two teams played a highly competitive second half as the Tigers fought hard to stave off an upset at the hands of the Hornets.
Texas Southern outscored Alabama State 46-41 in the second half while shooting 48 percent from the field (13-of-27). Kevin Scott chipped in 14 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 1 blocked shot.
TSUÂ returns to the friendly confines of the HPE Arena to face Alabama A&M on Monday at 7:30 pm.
