HOUSTON- Texas Southern took down Lamar in five sets during the Houston Cougar Classic Friday morning.
Texas Southern (2-3) took over the first set with a 13-3 run that broke open a 12-12 contest. The Lady Tigers continued to apply the pressure in the second set, as the two teams traded points early on before TSU put together a 9-2 scoring run to gain a sizable advantage over the Cardinals (13-6).
With the cushion, Texas Southern eventually cruised to a second-set win as the Lady Tigers didn't allow the Cardinals to get any closer than within five.
The third set saw the Lady Tigers rebound from a 7-4 deficit, as an 11-3 run pushed Texas Southern ahead 15-10. Lamar returned fire, eventually knotting the set at 19-19.
The Lady Tigers immediately scored four quick points and were poised to close the set, but failed to hold off a late Cardinals surge. Set four also went the way of Lamar after the Lady Tigers surrendered a 7-1 run that erased their 11-9 lead and pushed the Cardinals to a match-tying set win.
Texas Southern was able to prevail in a hotly-contested fifth set.
Kali Fluke and Alexis Austin put down 10 kills each for TSU, with Fluke adding five blocks and Austin adding six digs and three blocks. Cassidy Jannson chipped in nine kills, eight digs and one block.
