PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Texas Southern (5-7, 1-0 SWAC) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-8, 0-1 SWAC) in a four-setter during the opening night of conference play Friday.
UAPB looked well on its way to an upset bid as the Lady Lions roared out of the gate with a 10-4 start, but Texas Southern would claw right back into it with a 9-1 run that erased a 19-12 UAPB lead and made it 21-20 for the Lady Tigers. The teams fought to a 24-24 tie before UAPB claimed the set.
The Lady Tigers rebounded in set two, when they wiped out a 12-8 deficit to make it 14-12. Texas Southern outscored UAPB 11-7 the rest of the frame. After cruising to a third set win, Texas Southern found itself in a dogfight in set four, as the period saw 10 ties. In the end, consecutive UAPB mistakes handed the match to the Tigers.
Kali Fluke posted 10 kills, six digs and five blocks (four solo) for TSU, and Michaela Powell added 10 kills.
