MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Texas Southern fell to Tennessee State in straight sets during day one of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup 1 tournament Friday.
Sluggish starts to each frame ultimately doomed Texas Southern. Down 18-9 in the opening set, TSU (0-1) reeled off a 9-3 scoring run to get within three and eventually came within a point of tying the set, but was unable to close the deal.
TSU stumbled out of the blocks in each of the next two sets, facing deficits of 17-7 and 13-8 in the second and third periods, respectively. Both times, Tennessee State's advantage withstood Texas Southern's comeback attempts.
For TSU, Audriana Carson swatted down 10 kills and added five digs. Kali Fluke delivered six kills at a .462 attack percentage. Asia Howard notched nine assists and seven digs, and Allison Woods put up four assists and 10 digs.
