Box Score HOUSTON, Texas – Texas Southern defeated Grambling State 5-3 on Saturday at MacGregor Park in conference action.
Grambling State's Larry Barraza got the offense started in the first inning with a RBI double to left, scoring Angel Peguero.
Texas Southern answered in the bottom of the frame with a double by Chris Scroggins, pushing Ryan Lazo and Kamren Dukes home. TSU also added a run in the second on a Gerreck Jimenez sacrifice fly.
TSU posted two more insurance runs in the seventh, with Valdez collecting the Tigers' third double of the game to score Scroggins and Jimenez.
Grambling put together a two-run rally in the eighth inning, when Alexander Felder collected a pinch-hit two-RBI single. TSU closed the door on the visiting Grambling, inducing a fly out to end the eighth.
Grambling's Tanner Raiburn (2-5) gave up three runs on eight hits, struck out five, walked four and hit one in four innings of work in the loss.
Texas Southern's Ryan Rios (5-2) scattered three runs (two earned) on seven hits, struck out five, walked three and hit two batters in a 7.2 inning effort to collect the victory.Â
