HOUSTONĀ ā Krystalani Yockman collected four RBI for Texas Southern, powering the Lady Tigers to a 5-3 win over the University of Houston during the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic on Sunday.
TSU (6-7) did all of its scoring in the first two innings. Yockman ā who was 3-for-4 on the day ā hit a two-run single in the first to begin the scoring, and in the next frame she delivered another two-run single. Haley Smith later scored on an throwing error.
Megan Noel brought Houston within striking distance with a two-run double in the fifth, and Savannah Heebner added a RBI single in the sixth to close the defict to two. Lauren Rodriguez (2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R) would nullify the Cougars in the final inning to earn the save.
"A win like this is big for our program," said TSU head coach Worley Barker. "Anytime you can go out and get a win versus a quality non-conference opponent it means a lot. I've got a lot of respect for their head coach and the way she has built their program. Over the course of recent years UH has made several NCAA Tournament postseason appearances and have been ranked nationally. I'm extremely proud for us to be able to come out here and compete like we did throughout seven innings against a program of that caliber."
Jasmine Fulmore (2-1) got the win, going 4.1 innings and scattering five hits and five walks while fanning four. Amber Garza and Tiffany Marshall had two hits, and Smith scored two runs.
