Tigers comeback to defeat Prairie View A&M

HOUSTON- The Texas Southern University Tiger baseball team beat in-state and conference rival Prairie View A&M, 6-5 at MacGregor Park, Friday night.

The contest was scoreless through the first two frames with Tiger starting pitcher, Larry Romero, sitting down the first six Panther batters in order.  In the third, PVAMU took advantage of a couple of TSU errors and had two extra-base hits en route to a five-run inning.

The Tigers responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game by plating five runners of their own.  TSU scored once in the fifth to take their first lead of the game, 6-5.  The run ended up being the game-winner as neither team would score again.

Romero regained his form after the rocky third frame and kept the Panthers off the board until he was relieved to start the 8th inning.  For the game, he pitched seven innings, giving up five runs, five hits and striking out 10 PVAMU batters to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Robert Pearson picked up where Romero left off, pitching two innings of shut-out ball to earn his second save.  Pearson held the Panthers hitless and struck out five batters in relief.

The pitching was backed up by some timely hitting by Tiger batters.  TSU shortstop Richard Alamo had a big game with three hits and three runs batted in, including the game-winner.  Catcher, Charles Guillory, and right fielder, Olajide Oloruntimilehin, each knocked in a run for the Tigers.

The win moves the Tigers to 4-6 overall and starts their conference slate off right.  TSU will look to take the second game of the series, Saturday, at MacGregor Park.

First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
