Tigers win streak snapped on the road

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Jayrn Johnson scored 21 points and swatted three shots as Prairie View A&M upset Texas Southern 59-55 on Saturday at the William Nicks Building.

Texas Southern experienced one of its worst shooting nights of the season, going 16-of-56 (28.6 percent) from the floor. The Tigers particularly struggled from long range, only shooting 2-of-21 from behind the arc. The 55 points scored is a season-low for the Tigers.

Prairie View A&M got a 3-point play from Admassu Williams that put the Panthers up 48-40 with 8:06 to play. After the Panthers went up 51-42, Texas Southern went on a 7-1 run and Malcom Riley's layup cut the deficit to 52-49. Riley then made a 3 with 20 seconds to go, trimming it to 54-52. PVAMU would use free throws down the stretch to preserve the win, which halted a seven-game skid.

The loss snaps a nine-game win streak for the Tigers and is the first conference loss for TSU this season.

Williams scored 11 points and pulled home four rebounds for PVAMU. Texas Southern was led by Chris Thomas, who put up 16 points, six boards and four assists. Riley added 15 points and six rebounds. Derrick Griffin notched another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
